The history of BNP Paribas in Japan dates back to 1867 when Comptoir National d’Escompte de Paris, the predecessor to BNP, opened a branch office in Yokohama. In 1907, Paribas participated in arranging Japanese government bonds issued in Europe. The BNP Tokyo Branch was established in 1973.

| 1973 | Compagnie Financière de Paris et des Pays-Bas becomes first European company to list on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (-1982 as name changed). |
| 2000 | Following the creation of the BNP Paribas Group in 2000, BNP Paribas Securities (Japan) Limited, Tokyo Branch, and BNP Paribas Asset Management Japan Ltd were founded. |
| 2010 | The combined entity renamed BNP Paribas Investment Partners Japan Ltd. |
| 2017 | BNP Paribas Investment Partners Ltd. changes name to BNP Paribas Asset Management Japan Ltd. |
| 2018 | Cardif Assurance Vie Japan Branch and Cardif-Assurances Risques Divers Japan Branch incorporated as Japanese insurance companies, Cardif Assurance Vie Japan and Cardif Assurances Risques Divers Japan. |
